Surrounded by hills, Surin Beach is located a few miles north of Kamala Beach on the west coast of Phuket Island. It is wedged between two headlands, Laem Singh to the south and Laem Son to the north.
With fine white sand and turquoise water, it has the distinction of being one of the most beautiful beaches on Phuket Island.
A soccer field and the remnants of an old golf course have kept development well away from the beach. However, there are restaurants on the beach, and shops, bars and cafes now line the paths that lead to the beach.
From November to April the water is wonderfully calm and clear, and good for swimming and snorkeling. Colorful aquatic creatures live around the headlands in considerable numbers. The beach is somewhat dangerous during monsoon season. The ocean floor descends sharply in several places and riptides are strong.
Every year, swimming deaths are reported at Surin Beach. But these conditions, and the large waves they help create, make the beach excellent for surfing during this period.
There are, though, reasonably prices accommodations located away from the beach, which means on the other side of the main beach road, Soi Haad Surin 8. In the 600 to 1,500 baht a day range are Surin Sweet Hotel, the Surin Sunset Inn, and Baan Chom Tawan.
Surin Beach is considered to be an excellent diner's destination. Of course, there are excellent eating places at the five star resorts, and most of the other resorts serve simple but tasty food. There are also reasonable places to eat on the beach and along the paths going to the beach.
Seafood and Thai dishes are the standard cuisine. Many of these places are not concerned with ambience and perhaps, because of this, the prices are quite reasonable. More fashionable – and expensive - places, however, are beginning to appear. Some of the "better" beach places are Taste, Twin Brothers, Catch Beach Club, Pla, Diver's and Nok Seafood.
Surin Beach does not have "entertainment" similar to that in the larger beaches of Patong and Karon. The larger resorts have bar and grills and some have live music. Most of the more trendy restaurants on the beach serve alcoholic beverages. Those seeking more excitement can go to Patong Beach, which is fairly close by.
Shoppers can stay pretty busy in Surin. Boutique shopping is organized around the five star resorts. A boutique mall, the Plaza Surin, is nearby and near a Tesco Lotus super center. Many of the smaller Thai shops have interesting things to sell, as well as typical tourist items. Surin is also located very near the open markets of Bang Tao, about 15 minutes away on Srisoonthorn Road.
